From South Auckland to Golden Bay

Mt Taranaki is one of Maori's most sacred peaks. Watching guard along the west coast it's distinctive shape can be easily seen on clear days from the coast South of Auckland to Nelson and Golden Bay in the South Island, it has long been a shining beacon for Maori navigators, guiding them on their path. Jutting out into the Tasman sea, Taranaki's rounded coastline provides a mecca of surf and windsurfing conditions with breaks to suit any weather. It's also this exposure that can make Mt Taranaki one of New Zealand's most dangerous mountains. There are numerous walks in Egmont National Park from short walks, full day summit walks or multi day around the mountain. The summit can be reached relatively easily in day for fit walkers. The weather conditions can change super fast so carry plenty of warm gear and food even on a sunny day. There are DOC information centres at North Egmont and also Dawson Falls. It's always recommended to stop in, check out the weather and track conditions. Fill in the log book if you're planning on summitting or walking for multiple days.
