City of Sails

Auckland is known as the 'City of Sails', until recently it was the home of the Americas Cup, the worlds most prestigious yachting trophy. (We don't talk about that any more though! Sshhh!) Located on an isthmus between two harbours, complete with sub-tropical climate, it boasts the most number of boats per head of population in the world. The harbours around Auckland , the Waitemata and the Manukau, have long been the life blood of the land.

Tourist Attractions in Auckland

New Zealand is not about cities and Auckland is no exception, many if it's best attractions are located on the city fringes not easily accessible by public transport, yet only a short drive by car. Mt Eden and One Tree Hill (Cornwall Park) are both ancient volcanic domes and were occupied by Maori tribes. They both provide excellent 360 � views of the city, Manukau Harbour to the south, the Waitemata Harbour to the north and beyond to the islands of the Hauraki gulf.

Places to go in and around Auckland

Devonport and North head are awesome on a sunny day. If you're feeling a little adventurous take a torch with you and check out some of the underground tunnels and gun emplacements scattered around North Head. The batteries that dotted around the Waitemata can be found on many of the gulf islands, particularly Motutapu and Rangitoto as well as along the mainland coast.

Amazing Marine and Bird Life

The Hauraki gulf and Waitemata harbour provide some of the most nutrient rich waters in the country. A warm current runs south along the east coast swirling in to the gulf before washing out the narrow Colville Channel between the Coromandel peninsular and Great Barrier Island.
