If you prefer vino to volcano's, another option to get to Wellington is to go via Napier and Hastings. SH 5 runs from the southern end of Taupo over the Ahimanawa range. The road kicks off with a long straight drive through the Kaingaroa forest before winding it's way over the pass. It's generally a good drive with plenty of great scenery however it can close due to snow from time to time in winter. The trip takes around 2 hours.
