New Zealand has some of the most breathtaking wilderness in the world. This playground can also be very dangerous. Being an island nation our weather can change suddenly and dramatically, please check weather conditions prior to departing, listen to local advice and travel prepared. We can experience four seasons in a matter of hours, even if you set out on a nice day you should always carry warm and waterproof clothing particularly when walking in mountain regions. If you are staying overnight be sure to complete log books at the DOC huts with details of your party and intentions. This saves lives in an emergency. Be Crime Smart

Unfortunately many tourist car parks are targets for thieves. Be sure to carry valuables such as passports, money, credit cards etc with you at all times. Don’t invite criminals to target you by leaving your possessions in visible places. Be particularly wary in National Parks car parks. It is generally better to leave your vehicle at nearby accommodation and arrange to be dropped off and collected from walks.

Sun Smart

New Zealand sits under an ozone depleted hole. It has one of the most vicious sun’s in the world. Be Wary! It takes less than 10 minutes to burn in the heat of summer. You can get just as badly burnt on a cloudy day. Make sure you apply minimum factor 15+ sunscreen every time you are outdoors over summer. Sun stroke as well as being dangerous, is also a very unpleasant way to spend your holiday. Make sure you wear a hat and try to avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm.

Beach Smart

Most of New Zealand’s beaches are not patrolled by life savers. If you are at a beach that has life savers, please, swim between the red and yellow flags, this is for your safety! If you are planning on swimming at an un-patrolled beach, never swim where the waves appear calmer, please read the water safety information on pages 42 & 90.

Book ahead, avoid disappointment

Many adventure trips, accommodation and ferries can be exceptionally busy during the peak season (Nov - Mar.) Be sure to make your reservations in advance to save disappointment and the unpleasant experience of not being able to find somewhere to stay.
